In Vrindavan, on a simple day
All the ladies hurried about their way
To Yashoda’s place, they went with curiosities clad
To meet her beautiful night-hued lad
As they all peered over the cradle to see his face
They failed to envision another soul with greater grace
As the baby smiled at them with bubbling zeal
Their hearts melted like the butter he would soon steal
One of them picked him up and placed him on her lap
Yet despite every lullaby, the boy refused to nap
They cradled him, swaddled him and tried what not
Yet all their attempts were attempted for naught
For the baby, whom the ladies so simply held
Was the one within whom the entire universe dwelled
For in one doze the balance of the world would fall
Hence Maha Vishnu himself mustn’t sleep at all!
Yet the innocent ladies tried and tried in vain
Yet with his eyes closed, the boy just wouldn’t remain
With his big bright eyes, he would simply stare
And with each blink, the Gopikas fell into deeper despair
As more distressed the Gopikas became
As a final resort Yashoda herself came
And into her hands, her baby she took
And at her beloved son, did she then look
Once she set her gaze, she couldn’t pull it apart
From the lad who so easily enticed her heart
To sculpt a soul so perfect from head to foot
She wondered of the effort Lord Brahma had to put
She knew for sure that the oceans would run thin
If they were to attempt holding her love for him within
As she held her little boy in her embrace
She sang a rhythm with effortless grace
A tune, perhaps sweeter than the flute he would soon play
A rhythm that can soothe any mind wandering astray
Krishna felt Yashoda’s song through his ear
A lullaby that sprung from affections most dear
And as Krishna heard his mother sing
He realized what seemed to be the most obvious thing
Here, he is not the god ruling over the entire space
He is not the lord of the three worlds while in her embrace
As Krishna looked at his mother above
At her eyes shining with unparalled love
He realized the universe Maha Vishnu can run
For now, on earth, he is simply her son
And so Krishna let his heart be swayed
For the first time since time itself was made
And so long as he was on his mother’s lap
A baby could surely afford to take a nap!
